On the occasion of Labor Day, Rotaract Aley launched a powerful initiative that celebrated the spirit of entrepreneurship and community resilience: Local Legends. This unique project was designed to support small, home-based businesses while giving our members a practical, hands-on experience in the world of local enterprise.
The idea stemmed from a growing need in our community—small businesses that form the backbone of our local economy often lack access to resources, visibility, and sustainable materials. At the same time, young people are eager for real-world learning opportunities that foster both skill development and community engagement.
In collaboration with our Professional Development committee, we identified and partnered with three small businesses that exemplify craftsmanship, tradition, and local spirit:
Through these immersive visits, our members gained a deeper understanding of small business operations, and witnessed firsthand the dedication, creativity, and challenges behind every product made.
In addition to learning, we also contributed directly by providing sustainable and practical materials tailored to each business’s needs—whether fabrics and tools for the tailor, or essential supplies for the bakery and sweets workshop. These contributions were designed to enhance productivity and ensure the businesses could continue growing independently.
While not a signature project, Local Legends leaves a lasting impact. It strengthens community ties, champions local entrepreneurship, and plants the seeds of collaboration, education, and empowerment. It’s a tribute to the value of local heritage, and a reminder to all generations to cherish and support the skills and stories that shape our neighborhoods.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Karine Ichtay, our inspiring Community Service Director, whose thoughtful leadership and coordination brought this initiative to life. Her vision helped bridge the gap between service and learning, empowering both our members and the legends of our local economy.
