In the wake of a national tragedy that displaced thousands, the Rotaract Club of Aley,led by the unwavering dedication of Community Service Director Karine Ichtay,stepped in to meet a basic but vital need—hot, nourishing meals for the displaced. Through the powerful initiative titled “Unity in Every Bite”,over 5,550 individuals were supported across nine school shelters in the Aley area. This project transformed urgency into action, proving that in timesof crisis, unity is not just an ideal—it’s a meal served with dignity.
The project was a shining example of collaboration at its best. The Lebanese Red CrossDisaster Management – Aley, AIM Academy, and an array of generous local restaurants—including Karam Jdoudna, Al Agha Restaurant, Al Fanouss, Aal Karaky, and Hadeel Catering—joined forces to make this vision a reality. Supermarkets and food suppliers also contributed essentials, allowing meals to be prepared in professional kitchens and distributed daily. By combining efforts, the team was able to deliver consistent, quality food support to some of the most vulnerable members of the community—children and families displaced by conflict.
Beyond food relief, the initiative was an act of peace building and resilience. By engaging local kitchens, the project also bolstered small businesses at a time when they, too, were struggling. With 10 committed members and countless volunteers from Interact, Rotary, and the broader community, the project became a movement—a wave of kindness sweeping across temporary shelters from Sawfar Public School to Lebanese University, Aley. The logistics were carefully coordinated, ensuring every meal was delivered fresh and on time.
As the scale of the crisis became clear, the team established a centralized kitchen in Bchamoun, where nutrition professionals prepared 1,000 meals daily,tailored to the immediate needs of the displaced. This structured approach allowed the project to scale efficiently and serve consistently, while maintaining the quality and care that defined its mission.
“Unity in Every Bite” is a living embodiment of our vision of Extending Legacies—it showcases how deep-rooted service, community partnerships, and a spirit of solidarity can rise to meet any challenge. It aligns with multiple Rotary Areas of Focus, including Peace building and Conflict Prevention, Disease Prevention and Treatment, and Community and Economic Development.More importantly, it leaves behind a powerful legacy—one of hope shared at the dinner table, of unity forged through action, and of a community that came together to heal, one meal at a time.
